Remnant Brewing

Union Square’s new centerpiece is so very Somerville.

Until Bow Market was founded in 2018, you probably had no idea there was a lovely courtyard tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of Union Square. But now, a former storage facility has been transformed into a series of tiny independent shops. And Remnant Brewing—which was the first business to open in the innovative market—is at the center of the action.

The combo of community and commerce here embodies Union Square: local families and friend groups flock to peruse vintage records and clothes, buy crafts and cacti, and snack on trendy local treats before sprawling out on Remnant’s patio or cozying into a stool pulled up to one of its long bars. And the beers do not disappoint. To sip in the sun all afternoon, spring for a full pint of the Bow St Session, a medium-bodied crowd-pleaser with tropical notes and hints of stone fruit. To sample from the changing roster of seriously creative suds, order smaller eight-ounce pours; past highlights include Dream Pop, a melony pale ale made with oats, and Exquisite Corpse, an imperial stout brewed with Taza Chocolate.

Thought Bow Market was lacking a coffee shop? Think again: Remnant brews coffee during the day. Stop in for espresso and drip brewed with Barrington Coffee Roasting Company beans starting daily at 9 a.m.
