Gilley’s Diner

This staple has been satiating late-night greasy food cravings for decades.

By Catherine Smart

This classic diner has been serving Portsmouth from this exact spot since 1974. Sure, you could stop in for lunch. But an order of Chili Cheese Fries, a loaded steamed dog, or the self-proclaimed “best burger in town,” tastes better if you have to work for it: Hit the bars for a few hours, wait in line with rowdy patrons, and order from the take-no-prisoners night-shift staff. Grab a handful of napkins, eat the messy-by-necessity meal standing up in the parking lot, and head back into the night.
