Tiny Thai

Not your average Thai takeout spot.

By Molly McDonough

You might not have come to Vermont expecting a singular experience in Thai home cooking—but Winooski is full of surprises. Head to this casual spot in the center of Burlington’s lower-key neighboring town, and direct your attention to the “Genuine Thai” section of the menu. Sure, the Pad Thai and Massaman Curry are solid here, but you can try those in Boston (or anywhere, for that matter). You’re here to sample the ultra-hot Thai dishes you didn’t know about. Kick it all off with the Som Tam Bhoo Kem, a version of papaya salad so spicy you’ll probably need an order of sticky rice alongside it. Then feast on specialties from Kua Kling, a chopped chicken stir fry hailing from Southern Thailand, to Guay Jub, a sweet-savory soup of stewed pork, tofu, and egg. Bonus: Tiny Thai is BYOB, so head here with a pack of VT craft beers for a feast with friends that won’t break the bank.

24 Main St, Winooski, VT

  • Must Have

Krapow Gai Kai Dow

From the “Genuine Thai” section, this flavorful dish of ground chicken packs in tons of basil and plenty of heat; rice and a fried egg help to dilute the spice.

  • Insider Tip

Head here during lunchtime to order a Tiny Thai Trio: a drink, a side dish, and a smaller version of a main dish for only $9.18.
