On Turkey Day, Delicious Wines to Please a Crowd

By Ellen Bhang · 11/12/2017

If you’re pondering what to pour for the Thanksgiving feast, look no further than these versatile American-made bottles. Each will mix and mingle with everything on the buffet table, taking your guests from cocktail hour to full plates with ease. Be sure to stock up—yours is a thirsty crowd.

The bottle: Gruet Winery “Sauvage” Zéro Dosage Sparkling Rosé
Price: Around $25
The wine in words: Before relocating from France to New Mexico, brother-sister team Laurent and Nathalie Gruet learned to craft Champagne alongside their father Gilbert. Nearly 30 years later, the family produces a beautiful line of méthode Champenoise sparklers in Albuquerque, including this pinot noir rosé, blushing beneath a head of frothy bubbles. Strawberry-scented yet dry, it offers bright acidity that refreshes between bites.
Pair like a pro: Delectable with all things salty, fatty, and crunchy

The bottle: Fausse Piste “The Mineral Selection” Viognier 2015
Price: Around $25
The wine in words: Trained as a chef, Jesse Skiles didn’t intend to become a winemaker, but couldn’t resist the calling after a trip to France’s Rhône Valley. Today he sources grapes from trusted growers in the northern Columbia Valley, crafting pours at his urban winery in Portland, Oregon. To make this splendid viognier, a portion of the wine is fermented in older French oak, giving the white a weight that’s well-suited to comfort food favorites.
Pair like a pro: Best friend of buttery side dishes

The bottle: Matthiasson Family Vineyards “Tendu” California Red Wine 2016
Price: Around $25
The wine in words: You might chuckle at this chubby 1-liter bottle with its oh-so-casual crown cap, but this juicy blend of aglianico, montepulciano, and barbera is the genuine article, crafted by lauded winemaker Steve Matthiasson. Full of tart cranberry flavors, this California pour clocks in at just under 12 percent alcohol by volume, keeping you light on your feet.
