Wine in Cans: Taste Summer Beyond the Bottle

By Ellen Bhang · 06/26/2018

Canned wines—this summer’s hottest trend—are taking shop shelves by storm. These sleek aluminum vessels, featuring pours of every hue and style, vie for attention. But don’t settle for sticky-sweet spritzers or plonk of questionable quality. Go for the good stuff—finely crafted wines that just happen to be packaged in convenient pop-top cans you can take anywhere.

The following three lip-smacking rosés, all American-made, are among our favorites. Each one is vinified with enough oomph and sass to be pulled ice-cold from a cooler without compromising aroma and flavor. So leave the heavy glass bottles and fussy stemware behind. Enjoy these pinks lakeside, poolside, and everywhere else your warm-weather adventures take you.

Sip this: Old Westminster Winery “Farmer Fizz” Sparkling Rosé
Price: Around $10 for a 375 ml can
The wine in words: New to wine from Maryland? Start with this blushing beauty. Brought to you by a fresh-faced trio of siblings who have breathed new life into the family farm, this frothy pink is full of lush strawberry and lemon blossom aromas. It’s crafted primarily from whole-cluster-pressed merlot, along with a splash of juice from grapes like syrah, chambourcin, and cabernet franc.
Pair like a pro: Move over, mimosa! This is the quaff you want for brunch on the patio.

Sip this: Scribe Winery “Una Lou” California Rosé of Pinot Noir 2017
Price: Around $13 for a 375 ml can
The wine in words: When winery co-founder Andrew Mariani welcomed his daughter, Una Lou, into the world, it was right in the midst of the 2016 grape harvest. So it’s only fitting that this celebration wine is named for her. With scents of strawberry and stone fruit, this Sonoma rosé offers silky texture and a dash of intriguing saltiness, making it a darling of somms and retailers alike. On the label, a reclining maiden asks, “Where shall I take you to?” It’s a question to ponder as you pack a picnic basket.
Pair like a pro: Ideal to sip alongside your favorite lobster roll.

Sip this: Dear Mom Wine Co. Oregon Rosé
Price: Around $19 for a four-pack of 187 ml cans
The wine in words: Don’t let the adorable popsicle motif fool you. Inside each mini-can is terrific wine, juicy and mouth-filling. This pink is crafted from syrah and malbec grapes grown in organic, watershed-friendly vineyards. The founders of the company, fast friends since they met on a high school basketball court, donate a portion of the proceeds to charities promoting women’s health, putting into action their love of mothers everywhere.
Pair like a pro: Wrap up this cube and give it to mom, but don’t tie the ribbon too tight. You’ll soon be cracking open a can for everything she plans to feed you.
