Bob's Clam Hut

A can’t-miss Kittery institution.

By Catherine Smart

Bob’s is in the middle of Kittery’s busy outlet shopping district on Route 1—but this is no tourist trap. The hut has been serving fresh Maine seafood from this very spot since 1956. Don’t be deterred by the line; it moves fast. Soon you’ll be plopped down on a picnic table in front of a Seafood Basket overflowing with golden fried scallops, whole-belly clams, flaky white fish, and fries. Dip your catch into classic tartar sauce or slightly smoky chipotle mayo. Bob’s also makes an excellent, super-traditional lobster roll: A buttered, griddled bun is stuffed with claw, tail, and knuckle meat with mayo and just a touch of lemon. And you can’t go wrong with classic, creamy New England Clam Chowder. Finish with a cone from in-store Rococo Ice Cream before waddling on over to the outlets to purchase some elastic-waist pants. Totally worth it.

After 62 years, Bob’s decided it was time to expand; a second store opened in Portland, Maine, in 2018. Now you can get Bob’s in Maine’s big city.
