Where to find it: Now that it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, the crew at Blackbird Doughnuts is eager to put something cool in your hands. Fortunately, it’s easy to get the bakery’s goodies all over town. While we love the Fenway, Harvard Square, and Brighton locations, we’re absolutely smitten with the original outpost in the South End. With its gleaming white tile walls and chandelier housed in a chic black birdcage, this spot offers a stylish retreat from the heat.

Notes on the nosh: Blackbird Doughnut’s Ice Cream Sandwich is the summer treat of your dreams. Each made-to-order creation showcases your choice of a brioche or cake donut crafted by head baker Erin Connor and her talented team. A dozen flavors are on offer daily, ranging from the familiar (Chocolate Old Fashioned and Vanilla Glazed) to the wildly inventive (Lychee Ginger Lemonade and Scallion Pancake Fritter). An amiable staff member will slice your selection in two, nestle a fresh-from-the-freezer puck of ice cream between the halves, and shower the sides with rainbow or chocolate sprinkles. In a genius move, the filling—vanilla, chocolate, or a swirl of both—is made of soft serve, lighter and airier than traditional ice cream. Its fluffy texture is just right, making every bite the perfect bite.

Sip alongside: Before you tuck into that sandwich, make sure you have a Cold Brew at the ready. Unlike iced coffee, which is assembled by pouring the hot beverage over ice, this version is crafted much more gently. Coarsely ground coffee is steeped in room temperature water for several hours, resulting in a less acidic drink. Dedham-based Fazenda Coffee Roasters creates a special mix of beans for the donut chain, fittingly named Blackbird Blend. Nutty and ultra-smooth as Cold Brew, it offers a refreshing counterpoint to sugary indulgences.
