Hangover Spots

The Gallows

These five life-saving Boston institutions are guaranteed to bust a hangover—or simply satisfy a brunch craving.

There’s no doubt that South End gastropub The Gallows creates a lot of hangovers, but it sure can cure them, too. Impressively heavy plates like the Sunrise Poutine and pulled pork-covered Johnnycakes are bound to do the trick, but those looking for immediate relief can cut straight to the Hangover Burger: two patties topped with American cheese, fried Babybels, hot Grillo’s pickles, and a fried egg. Extra reinforcements arrive in the form of Blackbird doughnuts, owned by the same crew.

Mike & Patty's: Fancy

Breakfast sandwiches and hangovers go hand in hand, and Mike & Patty’s serves some truly fearsome takes on the morning-after classic. Options include an overstuffed Breakfast Torta and the aptly named Breakfast Grilled Crack, which matches Gruyère, cheddar, and American cheese with a fried egg and bacon between buttered sourdough. You can even order online and have your sandwich delivered, so you (almost) never have to get out of bed.

Authentic Mexican fare has a comforting quality that pairs particularly well with groggy mornings, and there are few better places to get it than at Angela’s Cafe. Order a plate of Chilaquiles—salsa-dredged tortilla chips smothered in chicken, queso, and sour cream—or go all-in on a smoky, spicy chicken Tinga Burrito. A nap may be in order after the check arrives, but consider it a part of the healing process.

Breakfast empanadas, buttermilk biscuit sandwiches, nostalgia-laced pizza bagels—the brunch fare at Trina’s Starlite Lounge is comfort food at its most comforting. Those that swear by hair of the dog will find treatment in the form of “adult smoothies” and bloody marys made with house-infused vegetable vodka. (Should your weekend go into overtime, know that brunch is offered on Mondays, too.)
