El Rancho Grande

Enchanting enchiladas await at this Mexican gem.

By Jenna Pelletier

Fifteen years after immigrating to America from Puebla, chef Maria Meza opened this tiny Mexican restaurant with her family—and Providence is glad she did. Here you’ll find straightforward, craveable food from the owner’s historic central Mexican city and beyond, including Mole Poblano, pork and masa-stuffed tamales, and the hominy soup Pozole. And there’s more to come: The Meza family plans to open a much-anticipated second restaurant, Dolores, in Providence this spring.

  • Must Have

Enchiladas Trio

Less greasy than typical cheese-laden versions, this enchilada dish features three rolled corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken, each topped with a different spicy sauce.

  • Insider Tip

Order a mezcal-based cocktail from the bar, which is often staffed by one of Meza’s sons. The tiny bar was one of the first in the area to stock a large selection of the smoky agave spirit.
