Mr. Kim's

A beloved Portsmouth chef returns with a new spot inspired by his Korean roots.

By Catherine Smart

Mr. Kim is back! The opening chef of Anju Noodle Bar has returned to the Seacoast after a few years of travel to open his own bi-level spot in an historic building on State Street. Gary Kim’s restaurant is a love letter to globetrotting and to his Korean heritage. The menu features bold shareable plates: Bulgolgi Sliders served on sweet, pillowy Hawaiian rolls; Carrot Mochi; and ‘Bolognese’ Mazeman noodles. It’s an umami-packed study in comfort food nostalgia that crosses east to west. Wash dinner down with an inventive tropical cocktail like Mr. Kim’s Milk Punch, made with soju, sake, melon, lychee, and peppercorn, and see what the “new” Portsmouth is all about. As Mr. Kim himself says, “It’s not fusion, it’s just dinner at my house.”
